About Rita Vandevorst

Rita Vandevorst is a dedicated printmaker specializing in the rare and labor-intensive art of mezzotint. Working from her studio in Belgium, she explores the subtle transitions from deep velvety blacks to brilliant highlights. Her work reflects a deep reverence for traditional craftsmanship, patience, and visual atmosphere.
Background & Artistic Journey
Born with a passion for fine arts, Rita discovered the rich expressiveness of copperplate engraving and intaglio techniques early in her career. Captivated by the unique depth of mezzotint (a process invented in the 17th century) she mastered the meticulous art of preparing copper plates with the rocker and hand-burnishing delicate tonal variations.
Rita Vandevorst (born 1958 in Sint Truiden, Belgium) is a contemporary Flemish artist widely recognized for her expertise in the mezzotint printmaking technique, a demanding and rare process in modern graphic art.
Vandevorst studied Plastische Kunsten (Visual Arts) at the Rijksnormaalschool in Hasselt and Vrije Grafiek (Free Graphics) at the Academie Haspengouw Beeld in Sint Truiden, where she later taught for more than three decades. Early in her career she worked with etching and aquatint techniques, gradually developing her personal visual language.
During the COVID 19 pandemic, she made a significant artistic transition from etching and aquatint toward mezzotint, shifting from zinc to copper plates. This change allowed her to explore deeper tonal ranges and achieve more dramatic clair obscur contrasts, a hallmark of her work.
Vandevorst’s mezzotints are characterized by dense textures, meticulous detail, and atmospheric depth. Her imagery often features birds, especially ravens, interacting with human figures, forming mysterious, gothic narratives that invite reflection on human behavior and emotional states. These symbolic elements recur throughout her compositions, creating powerful metaphoric links between nature and inner experience. Her works exhibit a strong interplay of light and shadow, with a focus on emotional resonance rather than simple representation. This grounding in tone and contrast is typical of mezzotint but is pushed further in her pieces to create haunting, evocative scenes.
Over the years, her artistic focus has centered on light and shadow, quiet moments and portraiture. Every print is individually inked, wiped, and pulled by hand on an etching press, ensuring each impression carries its own distinct subtle character.
Why the Raven Is So Important in My Work
Ravens are a rare but powerful motif in printmaking, and certainly in Belgian printmaking. The bird appears primarily in symbolic, poetic, and atmospheric visual languages. Ravens traditionally symbolize intelligence, metamorphosis, observation, and the boundary between light and shadow—themes that are particularly well-suited to mezzotint.
Ravens are effective subjects because the dark feather structure complements mezzotint perfectly, and the silhouette is highly recognizable in print. The bird carries centuries-old mythological meanings, which is ideal for artists working with silence, space, and atmosphere.
As a Belgian mezzotint artist, the raven is a recurring motif in my body of work. The bird connects nature, symbolism, and observation, and reappears in various series as a silent witness, messenger, or figure straddling boundaries.
Hence the title of my website: Ravenartwork
